Japan Road Trip: 14 Days

With two weeks, you can go well beyond a quick loop near Tokyo and build a more complete picture of Japan by car, combining mountains, coastline, and cities without feeling rushed at any single stop.

Thinking in Regions, Not Just Days

For a 14-day trip, it helps to think in terms of two or three regions rather than a long list of single-night stops. Spending two or three nights in each area gives you time to actually explore, rather than spending most of each day driving.

Week One: Mt. Fuji, Hakone, and Izu

Start with the classic combination of Mt. Fuji and Hakone, then continue down to the Izu Peninsula for a slower-paced coastal stretch before heading further afield.

Week Two: Into the Mountains

Use the second week to head into Nagano and the Japan Alps, where historic towns, mountain scenery, and (depending on season) skiing or hiking offer a different pace than the coast. From there, loop back toward Tokyo to return your car.

Building in Flexibility

Two weeks is long enough that weather, traffic, or simply enjoying a stop more than expected can shift your plans. Leaving one or two days unplanned, or booking only your first few nights in advance, gives you room to adjust as you go.
