Nagano prefecture takes a Japan road trip further into the mountains than most day-trip destinations near Tokyo, trading city scenery for alpine peaks, deep valleys, and historic post towns along old trade routes. The drive itself involves more mountain passes than routes closer to the capital, so it suits travelers who don't mind spending a full day or two behind the wheel to reach quieter, higher-altitude scenery.

Depending on the season, Nagano offers very different experiences by car. Summer and autumn bring cool mountain air, hiking access, and some of Japan's best foliage viewing along routes like the Japan Alps Salt Road or the roads around Kamikochi. Winter transforms the region into one of the country's main ski and snowboard destinations, with resort towns such as Hakuba reachable by car, though winter tires or chains are strongly recommended on mountain roads during this season.

Historic stops such as Matsumoto, with its well-preserved castle, and the Nakasendo post towns of Magome and Tsumago add cultural depth to a Nagano itinerary. Because of the distances and elevation changes involved, it's worth building extra driving time into any Nagano route, particularly outside the main summer season.
